Natural sheep wool and its unusual properties

Naturalna wełna owcza i jej niezwykłe właściwości

Natural sheep wool was an important raw material thousands of years ago. Our ancestors used sheep's fleece to create a cover in order to protect their bodies from the cold. Its extraordinary pain-relieving features were quickly discovered. Today we know that this is due to lanolin, a natural wax, produced by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals. Every year the sheep grow a new fleece, making wool one of the most sustainabale fibers. The sheep are sheared once or twice a year.

Wool extraction is a quite simple process - as long as the grass is available for sheep consumption, wool can be produced ;) Unlike synthetic fibers (require oil and refineries), wool can be produced from non-renewable resources.

We chose sheep wool to fill our sleeping bags and pillows because of the many advantages that this natural fiber offers. We have prepared for you a list of the most important, in our opinion, the characteristics of this material.

Wool provides excellent insulation

The excellent insulator -this is the basic feature of wool. A woolen sleeping bag will provide your child with coziness and warmth, retaining air between the fibers. It also allows to wick moisture away from the body through the fabric. This helps to keep the skin dry and comfortable. Wool can be worn in both winter and summer, as these insulating and wicking properties help keeping the body temperature constant. Wool is also able to react to any body temperature changes. It is an active fiber that maintain to keep warm when it is cold and cools when it is warm. This makes it an ideal material all year round.

Wool fibers ensure free air circulation and moisture removal for the body which makes them skin-friendly. Thanks to the lanolin, the wool is ionized negatively, which has a beneficial effect on the proper functioning of the body, immunity increase, and well-being.

Wool is renewable and recyclable

The use of wool fiber instead of synthetic fiber has environmental benefits. Wool is a naturally renewable product; sheep grow new fleece every year. Wool products that are no longer used can be recycled and turned into something else. For example, old woolen clothing can be regenerated and converted into roof insulation. If they are not recycled, they can be added to the compost. Wool fibers naturally decomposes into the soil, releasing valuable nutrients back into the ground. Compared to synthetic materials, it decomposes very quickly!

Wool provides good sleep

Research carried out by the University of Leeds in the UK (published 21.04.2016) has shown that the use of a 100% woolen duvet instead of synthetic one, contributes to better sleep. The naturally insulating and wicking properties of the woolen fibers control the microclimate of the sleeping person. The keratin protein molecules in wool are able to absorb up to one-third of their weight in water before the fabric becomes moist. What's more, wool fibers are breathable, which allows the sleeping person to breathe through the body. This is particularly important, especially for children who spend even half a day sleeping. It is worth taking care of the proper regeneration of the body.

It's anti-allergic and easy to clean

Wool is anti-allergic, because it doesn't allow dust to accumulate in it, and the presence of lanolin in the hair of wool is an impassable barrier for bacteria and mites. Lanolin also prevents dirt from penetrating the wool's structure. Since its primary function is to protect the sheep's body from the surrounding environment, the wool fibers have a natural protective layer. This helps to prevent the absorption of any traces and stains, so that dirt settles on the surface and can be easily removed.

As you can see, wool has many important advantages for humans and the environment. If you are looking for a sleeping set for your child that will help you adjust to its body temperature, is ecological, breathable, and hypoallergenic, choose wool.
